Phycotech's VSA photobioreactor is a technological breakthrough of photobioreactor design. The patent pending Vertical Serpentine Airlift photobioreactor incorporates positive features from each of the traditional photobioreactor designs such as tubular, flat panel and bubble column while leaving behind the negative aspects.
Aeration – The entire culture is constantly aerated. This insures effective degassing of O2. It also prevents laminar flow which can cause photo inhibition and dark zones. Precisely delivered aeration in the culture induces flow and thus eliminates the need for culture pumps. This avoids the high shear conditions caused by pumps and reduces the damage to algal cells. It also reduces capital and operating costs.
Counter current addition of CO2 – CO2 in introduced into the culture in down flowing tubes. This allows for the efficient utilization of CO2 by the culture.
Culture illumination – The reactor has a short light path of less the 2.5 cm. This allows for very high culture densities. The entire culture is illuminated, dark zones have been eliminated.
Durable low cost components – System components such as diffusers and "U" bends are injection molded parts which are high quality, low cost and 100% recyclable.
The "tubes" are made of flexible film roll stock. They are robust, very low cost and 100% recyclable. Assembly – The reactor is assembled onsite from component parts. Most components fit together by hand. The only tools required are a wrench and channel locks.
Bio film – Turbulent culture conditions and reactor materials limit bio film build up. This increases reactor efficiency and culture life.
Cleaning – SIP systems are available as an option. The snap together design of the system allow for efficient manual cleaning.
